A Parent's Legacy

Today's Scripture: 1 Kings 1-4
Read it online at the Bible Gateway: (NIV) (NASB) (KJV) (The Message)

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. - 3 John 4

What are you hoping to pass on to your children? In 1 Kings 2:2-3 we read the charge David gave Solomon: "I am about to go the way of all the earth," David said. "So be strong, show yourself a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in his ways, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and requirements...so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go."

The Scriptures tell us that Solomon loved the Lord and walked in the statutes of David, his father. Solomon was a wise man, a rich man, the leader of a powerful nation, and yet he was a humble man before God.

How can we pass those things on to our children? Let me suggest a couple of biblical principles. First, we must pass on spiritual qualities by example. Solomon had observed his father's life and knew David was far from perfect. But he'd also observed his father's repentance and obedience. When David spoke to his son about walking in the commandments of God, Solomon had a strong example to follow.

A second principle involves prayer. I know a woman in Iowa who has prayed for her son one hour a day from the time he was born. The thrust of her prayer? That he would be a godly man, walking with the Lord and being used by Him. When I see that man's life today and all that God is using him to do, I realize she gave him something through her prayers that few children ever receive.

Be an example of Christlikeness and also pray regularly for your loved ones. There is nothing greater you can leave them.

Prayer

Lord, help me to live as a godly example before my children and to pray for them daily as they learn to walk with You. Amen.

To Ponder

What example are you passing on to your children?
